At the 23rd Annual Meeting of the US Academy of Osseointegration (AO) in Boston, Nobel Biocare and the AO Foundation awarded Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark with the inaugural Nobel Biocare Brånemark Osseointegration Award.
The Award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate a driven desire to advance patient oral health and well-being through humanitarian, research and educational excellence in the field of implant dentistry. The monetary award of US$100,000 will be distributed yearly by the AO Foundation.
Professor Brånemark is the first recipient of the award in honour of his life's work and his discovery of osseointegration and implant dentistry.
"Securing the safety of every patient with predictable structural and functional rehabilitation of oral and maxillofacial defects requires close collaboration of clinical and technical development and critical long-term documentation," Prof. Brånemark said. "The constructive interaction between clinical reality from the AO and the required hardware from Nobel Biocare is identified and emphasised in this award."
The AO and the AO Foundation were established to provide a focus on implant dentistry and tissue engineering advancements. By fostering the highest standards of research and education, AO practitioners enrich their patients' lives and enhance their students' knowledge and skills.
"We are deeply grateful to the entire Nobel Biocare organization for this generous donation in support of the AO Foundation's vital mission. This reasserts Nobel Biocare's long-standing commitment to the field of osseointegration and further strengthens the relationship that the AO and Nobel Biocare have shared for many years," said Dr Dayn Boitet, President of the AO Foundation.
Thousands of patients have already benefited from treatment by the AO's membership of more than 5,200 individuals in 70 countries. The Nobel Biocare Brånemark Osseointegration Award will provide essential support for the continuation of existing research grant programs and enable many more individuals to benefit from charitable programs of the AO Foundation.
"Nobel Biocare shares a special heritage with P-I Brånemark," said Domenico Scala, CEO of Nobel Biocare, "and we are honoured to facilitate the continuation of excellence in implant dentistry and quality-of-life improvements, which he began over 40 years ago."
